COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS – Catastrophizing

Catastrophizing involves focusing on the worst possible future scenarios. In this type of thinking, we imagine that the worst situations will occur, and we will remain helpless, unable to resolve these problems, or that solving them will be extremely difficult. During catastrophizing, we overlook other possibilities and potential solutions. In reality, it is often unlikely that our predictions will come true. Examples include:

  • “They’re not answering the phone—something terrible must have happened.”
  • “If I fail this exam, I’ll completely break down and be kicked out of school.”
  • “If I have a panic attack, I’ll go completely crazy and die.”
  • “If I end up alone, I won’t be able to handle life on my own.”

Catastrophizing is a hallmark of anxious thinking and is commonly seen in phobias, excessive worrying, and panic attacks. Sometimes, it is mistaken for being cautious and prepared. However, catastrophizing greatly amplifies anxiety beyond what the circumstances warrant. It leads to feelings of helplessness, reduces motivation, and makes it difficult to find solutions to problems.

In cognitive-behavioral therapy, we aim to recognize typical distortions in our thinking, understand their consequences, and work on making our thinking more flexible—by seeking alternative thoughts or exploring new experiences.
