Cognitive distortions – labeling

COGNITIVE DISTORTIONS – LABELING

Another cognitive distortion is labeling. This involves assigning fixed, often negative, traits to ourselves or others, disregarding the context of the situation. Sometimes, it takes the form of insults, such as:

  • “I’m an idiot/crazy/loser.”
  • “He’s selfish/a narcissist/a cheater.”
  • “I’m lazy/incompetent/bad.”

This distortion prevents us from recognizing the many factors that influence behavior, both our own and that of others—such as external circumstances, emotions, well-being, habits, unmet needs, and more. When we frequently label ourselves, our self-esteem can suffer over time. This type of thinking is often accompanied by unpleasant emotions like frustration, sadness, shame, and discouragement. Labeling is particularly evident in self-criticism, which is often heightened in conditions like depression.

In cognitive-behavioral therapy, we aim to identify the distortions typical of our thinking, recognize their consequences, and work on making our thinking more flexible—for example, by seeking alternative thoughts or exploring new experiences.
