BINGE EATING

Binge eating is becoming an increasingly significant problem nowadays.

Binge eating episodes can vary but share two common characteristics:
– The amount of food consumed is perceived as excessive.
– It is accompanied by a loss of control.

Binge eating is classified as an eating disorder in the DSM IV. It can also be a symptom of other mental health disorders. It sometimes occurs in individuals who follow radical diets—after a period of fasting, a binge episode may follow.

What characterizes binge eating?

• Rapid eating pace – Food is often consumed quickly during an episode, almost “automatically,” often with little to no chewing.
• Loss of control – The feeling of losing control can occur before the binge or gradually intensify during the episode.
• Tension and agitation – This may be experienced as a strong urge to eat or manifest in chaotic behavior. It is a state of intense discomfort.
• Emotions – At the start of the episode, when eating is still pleasurable, there may be a sense of satisfaction. As the binge progresses, feelings of guilt and disgust appear.
• Altered consciousness – Some individuals feel as though they are in a “trance” during a binge, as if their behavior is automatic and outside their awareness.
• Secrecy – Many people feel ashamed of their binges and fear revealing that they have a problem.

Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is an effective approach for treating binge eating. A personalized understanding of the problem allows for the creation of a treatment plan. In therapy, the focus is on changing thought patterns, finding healthy ways to regulate emotions, and developing new behaviors.
