Taking care of your mind by taking care of your body

Today, we will talk about reducing susceptibility to the “emotional mind” – one in which we tend to react under the influence of emotions, sometimes impulsively, without considering the facts.

Taking care of your mind by taking care of your body will be an important skill to develop in everyday life. Throughout the day, our body allows us to perform many tasks – it’s a tremendous effort. Moreover, stimuli affecting us (interactions with people, problem-solving, discomfort, etc.) are sometimes sources of stress and, consequently, accumulate unpleasant tension in the body. All of this causes our body to lose “resources” for coping, including the efficient use of emotion regulation skills. We become “sensitized” and overloaded, increasing the likelihood that new stimuli will quickly throw us off balance. For example: if we are sick, sleep-deprived, hungry, and standing in a long queue, the chances are higher that we might be rude in anger to the person who just bumped into us.

The skill of taking care of your mind by taking care of your body consists of 5 elements:

1. Treating physical illness – take care of your body, see a doctor, take prescribed medications.

2. Balanced nutrition – eat meals regularly and mindfully. Be cautious about foods that negatively affect your well-being.

3. Avoiding mood-altering substances – alcohol and other psychoactive substances.

4. Balanced sleep – adhere to sleep hygiene principles.

5. Exercise – incorporate daily movement tailored to your capabilities.

Of course, sometimes we cannot avoid situations where our resources are depleted, and emotional resilience drops. Remember to be understanding toward yourself and don’t give up on your efforts :).
