The ability to be mindful of other people can be incredibly useful if we value lasting and satisfying relationships. What contributes to this skill?
OBSERVATION:
Pay attention to people in your environment; show interest in them.
Focus on the person you are talking to; avoid multitasking.
Don’t plan your next statement in your head; listen attentively.
Be open to information from others.
Notice judgmental thoughts and set them aside.
Remember that it’s not always about being right :).
DESCRIPTION:
Describe what you see and hear; refrain from judgment.
Be mindful of your interpretations and assumptions about what the other person thinks and feels; check the facts.
Try not to question the motives of the other person.
If in doubt, ask; verify.
PARTICIPATION:
Try not to control everything in your interaction with others.
Fully engage in the interaction with the other person.
