What is dialectical behavior therapy (DBT)?
Developed by Marsha Linehan, Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) was initially created to apply cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) principles to patients with severe suicidal tendencies. Over time, it evolved into a highly effective treatment system for individuals who experience overwhelming and extreme emotions. These intense feelings can lead to self-harm, addiction, interpersonal problems, and suicidal attempts. DBT is considered the treatment of choice for individuals with borderline personality disorder (BPD). However, it is also beneficial for anyone who wants to learn how to better regulate their emotions, improve relationships with others, live more mindfully, and build “a life worth living.”
The core of dialectics is about combining seemingly opposite elements, such as simultaneously accepting the patient exactly as they are while also emphasizing the need for change to alleviate their current suffering. In DBT, a significant part of the work focuses on changing behaviors to be more effective and healthy. As a result, patients learn new coping skills throughout the therapy process.
A full course of DBT treatment consists of four key components: individual therapy, group skills training, phone coaching, and a family support program. This comprehensive approach allows for complete care for the patient and their support system.
At our center in Krakow, we offer psychotherapy using the Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) approach. We regularly organize group skills training and encourage you to contact us or follow our updates for more information.
