I can’t stand making mistakes – perfectionism

In the strategy of perfectionism, we constantly strive to meet the high standards we set for ourselves, despite the negative consequences that may arise (e.g., fatigue, stress, procrastination). We base our sense of self-worth on the outcomes of these pursuits (I am as valuable as what I achieve). If we fail to do something as we planned (perfectly), strong self-criticism arises.

It is difficult to abandon the perfectionism strategy because it often brings various benefits (e.g., satisfaction, promotion). If we build our self-esteem on achievements, it will not be easy for us to “let go.” Unfortunately, in the long run, strong perfectionism leads to anxiety, frustration, exhaustion, and avoidance, among other issues.

What should be kept in mind when working on abandoning perfectionism?

  • Perfectionism is a costly and often ineffective coping strategy.
  • Excessively high standards lead to frustration and resignation.
  • Good enough is good enough.
  • I can commend myself for what I do well.
  • I can treat myself as well as I treat others.
  • I can learn from mistakes.
