About habits

Today, a brief guide for working on healthy habits. We can start with an exercise that only requires a few minutes. Working on changing habits takes time, but it’s worth starting by choosing a specific behavior. When the goal is too general (e.g., I want to live healthier), it can be challenging to initiate changes and be consistent. Remember not to approach behavior change in an all-or-nothing manner – either I do something always or not at all.

Let’s think about why we consider a particular habit healthy – what benefits it brings us, how it affects our functioning, and long-term goals. Healthy habits are not only related to nutrition; they can also include practices like mindfulness exercises, talking with loved ones about the day, or reading a book before bedtime.

In the exercise, we have four categories of habits:
1. Healthy habits I currently practice: (describe behaviors you currently practice that contribute to your health, well-being, and long-term goals)
2. Healthy habits I want to reinforce: (describe habits that should occur more frequently)
3. New habits I want to develop: (what practices do you want to incorporate into your routine and why?)
4. Past healthy habits I want to return to: (what behavior used to bring me benefits?)
